About my Work

Originally from Germany, I am now based in Morecambe, Lancashire. During a career lasting 38 years, and also through my own personal history with pain, I have developed a broad experience working with many different pain issues, such as:

Primary Pain - origin unknown or persisting after healed injury, e.g.

  • fibromyalgia

  • chronic widespread pain

  • chronic low-back pain 

  • chronic neck pain 

  • chronic headaches (at least 15 days per month)​​

  • chronic shoulder pain 

  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Type I (CRPS I)

Headaches and facial pain, e.g.

  • migraine

  • cluster headache

  • atypical facial pain

  • trigeminal neuralgia

Professional Background

I have worked in the field of chronic pain throughout my career, collaborating closely with a wide range of professionals including medical doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and others. This multidisciplinary approach has given me a broad, nuanced understanding of persistent pain, so I understand the complexity of pain conditions from multiple perspectives. My career has included research, lecturing and published articles. I stay updated on the latest advancements in pain psychology and pain medicine to provide the highest level of care.​

2021 - Present

Pain Therapy with English and German Clients; Teaching  at the Universities of Basel and Luzern/Switzerland plus other training institutes in Germany

2017-2020

Co-development of a German self-help approach for chronic pain (Schritt-ins-Leben) that is used nationally across Germany.

2016-2020

Private Practice in Freiburg/ Germany; working within the  German Health Care System

2003-2015

Interdisciplinary Pain Management Center University Hospital Freiburg - Clinical Psychologist; Clinical lead from 2008

1996 - 2004

Implemented an Interdisciplinary Inpatient Pain Programme at the Elztal Clinic/Germany. 

1999

Completion of my professional training at University Freiburg  and accreditation as Psychological Psychotherapist (the German equivalent of a Clinical Psychologist)

1989 - 1994

Research Assistant and professional training at the Department of Medical Psychology/University Hospital Kiel/Germany in various pain projects, additional training in biofeedback

1982 - 1988

Masters of Science in Psychology; University Kiel/Germany
